Take It Or Leave It – Cell Phone Reception Issues In Tucson!

Tucson unfortunately was ranked #6 in the country with having the worst cell phone reception.  T-Mobile ranked #1 for having the worst service for Tucson residents.  Having T-Mobile as my carrier – I couldn’t agree more and tend to roll my eyes when I see their commercials because it certainly not accurate for Tucson!

A concern for renters in Tucson is cell use in their apartments or multiplex homes because of extra interferences, i.e, things in their neighbors’ homes that might disrupt frequency, building materials used to separate apartment walls that block signal, etc.

Here is a great hot spot map (you can change the settings for your own city as well to see how your area ranks for cell phone service) for Tucson showing which areas have the best service:

So what can you do? Here are some things I’ve been told from cell phone reps:

Switch carriers is probably tops on the list – these days you can keep your phone number so switching isn’t as bad as it used to be.

Plug your phone in – your battery might be strong enough to make a call – but maybe not strong enough to find a signal.

Go outside to make your call – sometimes trees, tall buildings, etc., get in the way of getting a clear signal.

Upgrade your antenna to a “hi-gain” antenna.  They are inexpensive and can be done at your cell carrier store or at home.

Buy a cellular repeater.  I little more costly, but if you rely on your phone – it might be a wise investment.

Nowadays you would think you could have good reception in large cities with all companies.

We have terrible reception problems in the Virgin Islands. There are only so many carriers that work at all. I am going to check out the high-gain antenna and the repeater and see if that helps. There a a few trade offs for living in paradise and this is a more frustrating one for someone who relies on their phone for their lively hood. Thanks!

Many carriers will give signal boosters for home use for their cell phones.  This will require a high speed internet connection.  Some will give it for free if you complain enough.
